 Mostly Microbes

This class focuses on the organisms that usually escape our daily notice. We will take a taxonomic approach and look at bacteria, archaea (bacteria-like organisms that live in extreme habitats like hot springs and deep sea vents), protists, fungi, microscopic animals and even viruses (technically not considered alive), how they are classified, and how they relate to each other.  The immune response to these organisms will also be examined. In the lab, students will learn how to use a microscope and prepare slides. Each two hour session will include a lecture component, a laboratory component, and an assessment. Short readings will be assigned each day. If you want to discover what lives just out of sight, this is the class for you!

 Crayfish Camp!

Explore the life of the wild crayfish in this hands-on approach to introducing arthropods. In this class, we'll not only learn how crayfish eat, move, reproduce, and protect themselves from predators, but also how they fit into the wider world of animal classification. You'll learn what defines an invertebrate, an arthropod, and a crustacean, and what other creatures are related to crayfish. Of course, we'll have live crayfish to handle, and the opportunity to take one home, if you wish!

This class explores the major biomes of the world and the factors (including the temperature, precipitation, elevation, and other geographic features) that define those biomes. We will look at the flora and fauna of each major biome, and what adaptations make it possible for plants and animals to live there. This class includes a field component, where we will focus on the major biome of Ohio - the deciduous forest. Students will learn how to make and use a dichotomous key, and will use one to identify native Ohio trees.
